5 March – 27 April 2012

Private View 8th March, 6.00pm – 7.30pm. All Welcome

The concept for Sci-lence of Man, including its physical construction was developed and created by the three artists Lee, Richard and David. The piece is an installation that invites the gallery goer to be part of the artwork itself, to interact and enter into the world that has been created. The theme is distinctly masculine, but not misogynistic. In fact, it is quite the opposite, being more suggestive or condemning than prescriptive.

Sci-lence of Man came about through a project offered to the graduate artist Lee Gascoyne as part of the MADE FRESH series of exhibitions initiated by University Campus Barnsley. Lee was invited to create, develop and lead an exhibition in collaboration with undergraduates at UCB as well as existing practitioners. During the developmental stages those invited and able to be part of the project were Richard Turner and David Jarvis. As an extension of this collaboration, an alliance with the curator of the Hive Gallery and DMC was needed in order to bring the exhibition to fruition.

31st October – 25th November

‘This is a gig poster’ is a new exhibition at d-space gallery, Barnsley. The exhibition is celebrates the growing popularity of ‘limited edition gig poster’. It brings together seven poster designers from England and Scotland. The exhibition runs until 25th November and the gallery is open Mon-Fri 10.00-4.00pm.

The exhibition is on loan from West Yorkshire Print Workshop. The idea for the exhibition came from WYPW technician and course organiser Kate Desforges. She noticed a growing number of gig poster artists using the screen printing facilities at WYPW to make their art. The posters were showing at UK poster events such as Poster Roast and international festivals such as Germany’s Flatstock. She said ‘ It seemed a shame that we could not show off their talent in the place where the posters were made’.

The posters are in very small editions and are hand screen printed in up to six colours yet they sell for prices between £12 and £60 making them an excellent way to start collecting art. Over 20 are on display at the gallery and show a diverse range of styles.

CITYSCAPES by eBoy
June 27th – September 16th

d-space is very proud to present an exhibition by pioneering ‘pixel-art’ and ‘vector-art’ exponents eBoy. Featured in the exhibition are eBoy’s famous pixelated cityscape series of posters featuring giant gorillas and sumo wrestler balloons, rampaging robots, girls, guns and rooftop tennis.

eBoy is a German based pixel art group founded in 1997 by Kai Vermehr, Steffen Sauerteig and Svend Smital. They have been commissioned by the likes of MTV, VH-1, Adidas, Nike, Honda, DaimlerChrysler, Paul Smith, Levis, Coca Cola, Kellogg’s, and many publications including Wired, The New York Times and The Face.

eBoy’s work has been seminal in influencing a generation of creative designers and artists by always remaining on the cutting edge. They manipulate, stretch and twist the limited possibilities of the most basic computer tools to produce works of enormous detail, thought, originality and humor.

The cityscape series of posters is very complex and makes intense use of popular culture and commercial icons. “If we don’t work on other projects at the same time it takes about six to eight weeks to finish a very detailed cityscape, three eBoys working on it, nearly full time. But, if we have to do it in our spare time, which happens often, it could take years to finish a picture since we can’t spend so much time on it.”

Their unique style has gained them a cult following among graphic designers worldwide, as well as a long list of commercial clients. Their latest projects include plastic Peecol toys with Kidrobot, and soon a new line of wooden toys are to be produced under their own label.

February 9th – March 18th

John Green is an emerging designer poised to become a future leader in his chosen field of product and furniture design. In the two years since graduation from York St John University, he has realised production of a selection of his own designs using local materials and manufacturers and worked with market leaders to develop and produce new pieces for the retail sector.

Benefitting from the innovative incubator programme DesignWORKS in York and a loan from The Prince’s Trust, Green established his own studio and began commercialising his existing designs and developing new ideas. He works closely with York based interiors retailer snowhome and UK and international manufacturers. His work has explored the impact of wasted materials from the design process by recycling offcuts into original works such as clock and hanger. His PANTONE® Wallstore is now licensed to Italian company SELETTI for manufacture and distribution and other products are sold through retailers such as online favourites Pedlars.

Green has shown twice at 100% Futures part of 100% Design, the London based design trade expo. On each occasion he has successfully signed royalty agreements, had products taken on by new companies and secured new commissions. In the world of design, exposure to the right supply chains and marketplaces is key and Green’s ongoing commitment to getting his work under the noses of buyers is helping to perpetuate his success.

This timeline focused exhibition of his work showcases his achievements to date and gives inspiration to other young designers trying to make their own mark.
